10 THINGS TO DO OUTSIDE OF FREETOWN

The 27th April marked the 56th Independence of Sierra Leone. I thought I would do this post dedicated to Salone's most recent milestone.

For those of you who are looking for a new adventure, a country you've never visited before, or the home base Sierra Leoneans and visitors, if you're getting tired of the same old city life…venture out. Here is a post of some activities to do outside of Freetown.

1. ROAD TRIP!

The easiest of them all, once you have a car. Go and explore another district. I took this photo on my way back to Freetown after a weekend spent in

Kabala

.

2. LOMA MOUNTAINS

The highest peak is Mount Bintumani which rises to a height of 1,945 metres. Since 1952

The area has been designated a non-hunting forest reserve

3. TIWAI ISLAND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

This Wildlife sanctuary is one

of the largest inland islands in the country and is still on my to do list to visit.

4. GOLA RAINFOREST NATIONAL PARK

There are hippos to be seen within this park, but I'll believe it when I see it. But without a doubt its a change of scenery from the city.

5. COASTAL BEACHES

Tokeh beach at The Place

Alongside the peninsula there are many beaches to choose from. My favourite beaches are Hamilton, Kent and Number 2 beach.

6. MAMA BEACH

I'm yet to visit but I think the image speaks for itself!? Photo by

7. BUNCE ISLAND

A tragic part of history but nevertheless Bunce Island is an island that should be taken into more consideration than it is currently. Such an extrodinary part of Sierra Leonean history is naturally falling apart. Try and visit the island whilst you still can. Find tour guides via

8. WARA WARA MOUNTAIN

I did the hour and thirty minute trek up Wara Wara Mountain at the end of last year. Let me tell you the view and the breeze made it all worth it! The mountain is in the Kabala of the Koinadugu District of Sierra Leone.

9. OUTAMBA KILIMI NATIONAL PARK

Outamba-Kilimi National Park

is located in northwest

Sierra Leone

with the closest entry being en route

to Kabala. The park is also near the border with the

Republic of Guinea

10. BANANA ISLANDS

Yep, Sierra Leone has a Banana Island too! I must take an overdue visit here, the last time I visited was back in 2010. Banana Islands are a group of three islands that lie off the coast of

Yawri Bay

. Water sports, resorts and fishing excursions are also available here.
